How to Do Keyword Research Properly?

March 4, 2015 by sathish Leave a Comment

Internet marketing has reached a new level in a year. I hope I don’t have to introduce you to keywords. They are the most important factor for SEO and have great impact on search engine rankings. Keywords help to make your content findable in search engines.

What are keywords?

Keywords

There might be some people who don’t know what keywords are. Keywords are particular words or combination of words, which an internet user will type in the search engine to get results related to those keywords. Keyword research is practice of identifying which keywords are for suitable for the article to be in top results. Hope you had this simple and basic knowledge. Let’s get started with keywords research.

Types

Keywords are basically of two types, small or head keywords and long tail keywords. They work in different way from each other. Small keywords are common and basically for the some part of the website or for some niche, whereas, long tail keywords are for specify product or post a visitor is looking for. Both are important for making your website up the rankings but you should emphasis more on long tail keywords as it can dramatically increase revenue, traffic and affiliated marketing. Also keyword difficulty score plays an important role in determining the traffic of a particular post.

Two Points

There are two things when you hire an SEO company. You want to get traffic or increase conversion ratio. These two things primarily are most important in keyword research. It totally depends upon what type of website you’re having SEO. If you’re website is more about content and ads, then you should emphasize on traffic.

As increase in traffic will cause increase in clicks on ads which will directly affect the revenue. But if you’re having an e-commerce website, then you should emphasize more on converting a regular visitor into buyers. You can simply do that by using long tail keywords and calling targeted traffic. A good SEO company should be dedicated to your goals.

The way you want to deliver things, they would do it as. If your top-level goals are straight-forward, such as increase revenue, then decide which optimization path is going to be the most effective based on your business, otherwise, go for conversion, which can directly affect the number of products sold which will create a lot of revenue.

How to know value of a particular keyword?

Value of a keyword can be checked by two points. First, how much volume of traffic has been received due to that traffic and second being the conversion power of that keyword. You can check whether that keyword is bringing traffic or not or converting visitors to buyers. You can have various ways to check it but Google keyword planner is easiest way to check it. It’s not quite as straight-forward as the keyword tool was, and there is a much heavier focus on AdWords, but it still provides data as a starting point for your research.

You can also check various aspects of your keyword by SERP. It is great way to check, since getting into technicality will make everything complicated, I would rather suggest try to use it on your own. The macro approach to keyword research is necessary for content heavy websites (and optimizing for traffic), but not ideal when doing intent-focused keyword research, as would be the case for e-commerce, software, or other scenarios where some keyword phrases are going to carry significantly more qualification.

The best way to get a handle on all this data is to group and categorize your keywords to look at the potential stage of the conversion funnel the searcher is within. By segmenting your keywords into funnels you can begin to paint a picture with your data that allows you to disseminate search intent.

Time for research

Keyword Research

You can’t build right things without right tools. The big websites are no different from yours. It just they have utilized their potential more and using tools to get most out of their keywords. The good news is that internet is full of keywords related tools and you can check everything at any time. Google keyword tool is just exceptionally good when it comes to knowing your keyword better.

Tools help in functionality from pulling search volume of traffic, to providing related suggestions, and metering the stats of a keyword, to competition in AdWords, and many other helpful bits of information.

Don’t do common mistakes like not knowing singular and plural. That could affect lot on the keyword and make it useless. SEO companies should understand this and should take every step to prevent these kinds of mistakes as it looks unprofessional. It could also decrease the ranking of the website.

Add every keyword

You should expand your lists of keywords and add every keyword that is related to that post or article, by doing this, your post would get ranked higher and half of your work is done just by recognizing which keyword to use at what instance.

As an internet marketer, you should validate your opportunities. By the data you have collected from various tools and software’s, you have used that in making your website a better place. These opportunities can sometimes become golden tickets and can sky-rocket the traffic you’re having. You have to make different keywords for title page that can easily be searched and your website should be visited instantly.

There are lots of ways to do keyword research and main thing is to apply that search to make a better website. If optimizing for traffic you want to find combinations to maximize use of high search volume terms. If optimizing for conversion you want to pay attention to intent instead of search volume. In the end you have to join broken pieces and make best of keywords combination one can ever built. I hope you understood every word of this article and do better in keyword research every-time with no laziness.
